In an effort to highlight the people who are leading colleges and universities across the nation, we at Watch The Yard reached out to Alabama State University and did an interview with Landon Hale, the 2024-2025 Student Government Association president.

The position of SGA president is a highly respected role, and there is a special pride in being elected by peers to lead. Hale, who is majoring in Rehabilitation Services, is from Birmingham and is a proud Spring 2023 initiate of Omega Psi Phi.

We interviewed Landon Hale and talked to him about his position, goals, future, and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2024-2025.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

As SGA President, the most important lesson I’ve learned is to never stop pushing toward greatness, no matter the challenges. Leadership comes with obstacles, setbacks, and moments of doubt, but true progress is made by staying determined and striving for excellence. Whether it’s advocating for student needs, implementing new initiatives, or overcoming resistance, persistence is key. Success isn’t just about achieving goals—it’s about continuously raising the bar, inspiring others, and never settling for less than what is possible.

What made you decide to attend Alabama State University for undergrad?

I chose to attend Alabama State University because of its strong commitment to nurturing students and fostering their growth. Throughout my tenure, the faculty and staff have been instrumental in providing the guidance, resources, and support necessary for my success. Their dedication has not only helped me excel academically but has also shaped my leadership skills and personal development. From mentorship to opportunities for engagement, ASU has created an environment where students are empowered to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

How has Alabama State University molded you into the person you are today?

Alabama State University has profoundly shaped my development through a diverse array of experiences. Participating in programs that facilitated visits to multiple Ivy League institutions broadened my academic perspectives and inspired me to aim higher. Receiving various awards recognized my dedication and hard work, reinforcing my commitment to excellence. Moreover, the daily interactions and relationships I’ve built within the ASU community have provided invaluable lessons in leadership, collaboration, and personal growth. Collectively, these experiences have been instrumental in molding me into the individual I am today.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning), and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

This year, as SGA President at Alabama State University, I am spearheading a scholarship initiative aimed at assisting graduating seniors in settling their outstanding balances. This program encourages classmates to contribute, fostering a sense of community and mutual support among students.

Additionally, the possible return of the Hive Awards, an annual event I established last year to honor and recognize student achievements across various domains. The inaugural Hive Awards, held on April 26, 2024, celebrated the diverse talents and contributions of our student body. 

These initiatives reflect our commitment to academic excellence and community engagement, ensuring that our students are both supported and celebrated throughout their educational journey.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

Alabama State University is deeply committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of its students through a comprehensive array of resources and initiatives. l

The Counseling Center offers a variety of services to assist students in developing healthy relationships and positive coping skills. Individual counseling provides a confidential space for students to discuss personal challenges, thoughts, and feelings with trained counselors who assist in problem-solving and coping strategies. Group counseling opportunities allow students to explore feelings, behaviors, and other concerns in a supportive atmosphere with peers and professionals. Additionally, the center conducts workshops and seminars on topics such as anger management, alcohol and drug awareness, and stress management, aiming to equip students with skills to handle various life challenges. 

ASU has also been selected as the recipient of the first Boris L. Henson Foundation Self-Care Wellness Pod (SHECare), providing students with a dedicated space for relaxation and mental health support. 

Through these comprehensive services and collaborative efforts, ASU demonstrates a strong commitment to addressing and supporting the mental health needs of its students.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership, to me, embodies the principle of service—a concept deeply rooted in the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He profoundly stated, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.”  This perspective underscores that true greatness in leadership is achieved not through personal accolades or authority, but through selfless service to others.

Dr. King further emphasized this notion by asserting, “If you want to be important—wonderful. If you want to be recognized—wonderful. If you want to be great—wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.”  This statement highlights that the essence of leadership lies in the willingness to serve and uplift others, rather than seeking personal recognition.

In my role as SGA President, I strive to embody this philosophy by prioritizing the needs and well-being of my peers. By focusing on service, I aim to foster a community where leadership is defined by the positive impact we have on each other’s lives, aligning with Dr. King’s vision of a society where greatness is measured by one’s commitment to serving others.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2025?

In 2025, educational institutions must adapt their online presence to meet the evolving digital landscape and the expectations of prospective students. Key strategies include utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver personalized and interactive content, thereby enhancing engagement by resonating with individual preferences. Active participation on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn is essential, as authentic interactions and user-generated content can build a vibrant online community and provide real-time insights into campus life. Implementing virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies allows prospective students to explore campuses remotely, offering a realistic and engaging preview of university life. Additionally, ensuring that websites and content are mobile-friendly is crucial, as responsive design and fast-loading pages enhance user experience and accessibility. By embracing these strategies, schools can establish a compelling and effective online presence that attracts and retains students in the digital age.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

Watch The Yard serves as a vital platform for Black students and college culture by highlighting the achievements and experiences of Black students across the nation. It offers representation and inspiration, showcasing the richness and vibrancy of Black college life, from Greek organizations to academic accomplishments and cultural events. By providing this inclusive space, Watch The Yard fosters a sense of community and belonging among Black students, encouraging them to connect, share, and celebrate their unique journeys. This platform not only amplifies individual stories but also strengthens the collective identity and pride within the Black collegiate experience. 

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

As I embark on the journey toward a juris doctorate degree, I draw inspiration from leaders like Dr. Quinton T. Ross Jr., the 15th President of Alabama State University. Dr. Ross’s transformative vision and unwavering commitment to servant leadership have significantly impacted the university and the broader community. His dedication to education and public service exemplifies the profound influence one can have through perseverance and visionary leadership. Reflecting on his legacy motivates me to pursue excellence and make meaningful contributions to society.
