Kehlani Dishes On Personal Life Since Coming Out As A lesbian

R&B star Kehlani recently sat down for an interview as part of a new Pride special on Facebook Watch and discussed their journey since coming out as a lesbian. The 26-year-old Grammy-nominated singer first expressed gratitude for the support of Javie Young-White, who is the bisexual father of their 2-year-old daughter Adeya Nomi, Them reported

“I have a 2-year-old. She’s the best,” Kehlani said. “Me and her dad are really, really close friends. And the decision to start a family was really easy for us because we both believed in each other’s ability to be good parents.”

As part of the Facebook special, Kehlani joined queer YouTube celebrity Larray and hopped on “the gayest bus in town” to embark on an adventure through the streets of Los Angeles. In the midst of the wild bus party, the celebrities spoke about their own personal life and issues related to the LGBTQ+ community.

Larray expressed gratitude for his grandmother, Paulette, who also joined the party on the bus.

“You’re the only person that was genuinely there for me,” Larray said. “For you to be so open-minded means a lot to me.”

Paulette added to the conversation, saying she has seen a change in the world since the 1950s.

“It’s more and more people now that are coming out,” she said. “Back then people were afraid to come out. I always say with Larray, I didn’t want him to not come talk to us.”

Kehlani also showed love for their own birth family and friends.

“I have some awesome grandmas, but also I chose a lot of my family,” the singer said. “Like my friends that are here, are all chosen members of my family.”

Singer Hayley Kiyoko, who collaborated with Kehlani on the music video “What I Need,” was one of several celebrities who joined the conversation during the Facebook Watch party. Kiyoko spoke about the meaning of the pride flag.

“Each color means something,” Kiyoko said while discussing the history of the flag. “Red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for harmony, violet for spirit.”

But the artist also focused on the latest update of the pride flag.

“In 2018, it got an upgrade by Daniel Quasar to include Black and brown stripes, found in the Philly pride flag, representing people of color,” Kiyoko said. “Also colors from Monica Helms’ flag to include trans and non-binary individuals.”

The program also featured actor and musician Laith Ashley, as well as Nikita Dragun, the CEO of Dragun Beauty, who talked about transitioning, the complexity of “passing” and intersectionality.
