Jonathan Majors Film ‘Magazine Dreams’ Dropped By Searchlight, Filmmakers Now Shopping Project As Rights Return To Them

Magazine Dreams was once the hottest ticket at Sundance, with studios fighting each other for the rights to distribute. Just a year later, after weathering the harassment and assault allegations and eventual conviction of its star, Jonathan Majors, Magazine Dreams is a film without a distributor.

Variety reports that Magazine Dreams is on the hunt for a new studio to distribute after Searchlight released the rights back to the filmmakers. The outlet reports that the Elijah Bynum-directed film was sold for “a reported mid-seven figures” last year after its buzzy Sundance debut. After Searchlight bought the rights, it was slated for a Q4 2023 release, right in time for awards season. But after Majors’ allegations came to light in March, and with the news surrounding the allegations growing worse for the star every month, Searchlight removed it from its release calendar in October.

This is just the latest hit to Majors’ career, one he feels he can still resuscitate according to his Jan. 8 Good Morning America interview. Even though he still believes himself to be both the hero and victim of his own story, the rest of Hollywood has already moved on. Since last year, Majors had been dropped from several projects.

The trend continued into the new year, especially after Majors was convicted on two counts of harassment and assault in December. The day of his conviction, Marvel released Majors from his role as Kang the Conqueror and in January, Majors was released from playing Dennis Rodman in upcoming Lionsgate film 48 Hours in Vegas.
