Interview with Cleo Silvers, Part 1 (Bronx Latino History Project)

Part 1 of an oral history originally recorded for the Bronx African American History Project on February 21, 2007 (and now included in the Bronx Latino History Project as well) with Cleo Silvers, Philadelphia native and lifelong activist who moved to the South Bronx as part of the VISTA program in the 1960s and went on to become part of the Black Panthers, the Young Lords, and other organizations. In this part of her oral history Cleo speaks about growing up in Philadelphia, her experience of the Civil Rights Movement in the North, and her first few years in The Bronx with the VISTA program and working as a community mental health worker at Lincoln Hospital.

The interviewers are Dr. Mark Naison, director of The Bronx African American History Project and professor at Fordham University, and Alice Stryker. The Bronx Latino History Project is a project of The Bronx County Archives at The Bronx County Historical Society Research Library.
