HS Basketball Phenom And Memphis Freshman Mikey Williams To Stand Trial On Gun Charges, Faces 28 Years In Prison
He was allegedly involved in a shooting at his home in San Diego last March, where shots were first at a car carrying five passengers, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. No one in the car was injured.
There is probable cause based on witness testimonies that Williams had the firearm and threatened to kill them, although he wasn’t seen firing the gun, according to the judge and as reported by Complex. The gun wasn’t found at Williams’ home when law enforcement obtained a search warrant in April. They found a handgun and other weapons.
Judge Sherry M. Thompson-Taylor set his arraignment date to Oct. 24 during a Tuesday hearing. A $500,000 bail increase was denied.
Williams remains on the roster with the Tigers and is currently enrolled in classes, the school said in a statement last month. He does not have access to his team’s facilities. Training started on Sept. 25 without Williams as the Tigers are preparing to open the season against Jackson State on Nov. 6, according to CBS Sports. The season opener is scheduled 13 days after Williams’ scheduled arraignment.
