Gospel Brunch – Oprah Winfrey's Legends Ball 2005 – Changed
The final day of Oprah Winfrey’s Legends Ball was a Sunday afternoon gospel brunch hosted on her estate front lawn. The culmination of a 3-day celebration honoring African American women in art, entertainment, and civil rights, the on-stage gospel performance slowly leaked into the crowd, inspiring a chain of impromptu musical testimony from the world’s greatest gospel, soul, and R&B female singers.
Favorite moments include Dionne Warwick, Shirley Caesar, Patti LaBelle, Yolanda Adams, Chaka Khan, and Gladys Knight each contributing their unique interpretation of the gospel standard “Changed.”
The 2005 Legends Ball event included a luncheon at Oprah’s house, a white-tie evening ball, and this Sunday afternoon gospel brunch. The 25 women honored included Maya Angelou, Shirley Caesar, Diahann Carroll, Elizabeth Catlett, Ruby Dee, Katherine Dunham, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Nikki Giovanni, Dorothy Height, Lena Horne, Coretta Scott King, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Toni Morrison, Rosa Parks, Leontyne Price, Della Reese, Diana Ross, Melba Moore, Naomi Sims, Tina Turner, Cicely Tyson, Alice Walker, Dionne Warwick, and Nancy Wilson.
