Georgia New Black Wall Street Market Draws More Than 10,000 People to Opening Day
The New Black Wall Street located in Stonecrest, Georgia had over 10,000 people on its opening day according to Atlanta Black Star. “I came from Memphis, Tennessee, just for this,” Keith Leavy who waited two years to come to the market’s grand opening. The New Black Wall Street Market is using 125,000 square foot Super Target building across from Stonecrest Mall, about 16 miles east of Atlanta’s downtown. The market’s name is a homage to the original Black Wall Street that was destroyed by white mobs in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921.
The grand opening saw lines throughout the building, vendors sold items from books by Black authors and African-inspired clothes. Tons of art was also available on opening day. Vendors like Baba Adams of Universal Love Jewelry was thrilled about the opening. “I’m jumping for joy to do something to support us as a people,” Adams said.
Trinity Ross the owner of Trinity’s Organics, a company founded in 2018 selling organic soap products. Ross was nervous about opening day, considering the market will be her first in-person store; she had previously operated online.
“It’s amazing, I have family that came all the way from St. Louis to come see my store and get the experience of the Black Wall Street Market. It can be a new tourist spot for the city,” Ross said.
