Florida Doctor Accused Of Being Mastermind Of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse’s Assassination

Haitian National Police Chief Léon Charles announced on Sunday that Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a physician from Florida, may have had a hand in the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse last week and has been arrested, the New York Post reports.

According to the Miami Herald, Sanon, who has ties to Florida for the last twenty years, is the third person to be apprehended by the Haitian police in the aftermath of Moïse’s death.

Two others, James Solages, 35, and Joseph Vincent, 55, told authorities that the assassination was a part of a coup to install Sanon as the president of Haiti.

In an interview on Saturday, Charles said that the plot included “two Haitian Americans and a high-profile doctor there,” but did not identify Sanon’s name.

“I would say that the Haitian [doctor] recruited” the assailants, who hired a group of Colombian nationals to carry out the plot, Charles said, the New York Post reported.

To date, over two dozen people have been arrested in connection the killing but according to Charles, Sanon was the mastermind behind the massacre, according to the New York Times.

Although Charles stated that Sanon was behind the plot to kill Moïse, he didn’t disclose any more information about how Sanon planned to ascend as Haiti’s leader.

“He arrived by private plane in June with political objectives and contacted a private security firm to recruit the people who committed this act,” Charles explained.

“The initial mission that was given to these assailants was to protect the individual named Emmanuel Sanon, but afterwards the mission changed,” he continued.

As Blavity previously reported, President Moïse was assassinated last week at his private residence in Port au Prince, leaving the Caribbean nation in a tumultuous state. First Lady Martine Moïse was shot in the attack but survived her injuries after receiving medical care in South Florida.

Since her husband’s death, Moïse made her first statement on Twitter.

“I’m alive by God’s grace, but I lost my husband Jovenel,” she said in the message.“One blink of an eye, mercenaries came to my house and riddled my husband with bullets.”

“After 25 years of marriage, they took my husband away from me. I knew going into politics wasn’t going to be easy. We must continue the fight,” she explained. “Jovenel was for the people. They assassinated him because he wanted to change the country. We must stand up and continue the fight…he was fighting for us, and we must continue fighting for him.”
