Rayford Whittingham Logan was an African-American historian and Pan-African activist. He studied post-Reconstruction America, a period he termed the ‘nadir of American race relations.’ During the late 1940s, he was a chief advisor to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People on international affairs. He was also a professor emeritus of history at Howard University.

In 1980, he was awarded the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP. Brookland, a Washington, DC, neighborhood where he has lived for many years, is designated as one of the city’s African-American Heritage Trail sites.
