I started blogging almost a decade ago. I can’t believe I’ve been in the game for nearly 10 years. When I first started out I had no idea what I was doing. I was literally writing and taking pictures for fun. My intention in the beginning was never to monetize my blog. It was just a hobby that would hopefully lead me to my dream career in fashion. Over the years, the plan changed. A year into blogging, I got my first paid campaign.

I realized that blogging could be a lucrative side hustle while working on my career. However, I still had no monetization strategy. I was making progress with my blog that I was happy with. I joined blogger networks to gain access to sponsored campaigns but once I learned how to pitch brands on my own, my brand really began to take off. Once I started to build my audience, I started dabbling in affiliate marketing with LiketoKnowIt, Amazon and Shopstyle. Since then I’ve worked on numerous campaigns with household name brands like Pantene, Clorox, and Adidas. My family has even commissioned campaigns with tourism boards and gotten to travel to places like New York City and Gulf Shores.

5 Easy Ways to Find Brand PR Contacts

Have you ever crafted the perfect pitch only to send it and have the email bounce? I have and it’s the worst feeling. Finding the right contact before sending your pitch is key to having more success when pitching. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been blogging for a little while but want to start working with brands, here are a few tips on how to find brand contacts.

1. Get the contact from a press release

This is probably the number one way I’ve had success of finding a brand PR contact and the right one at that. A press release will more than likely have the contact name, email, and phone number for the person you will want to send your pitch to.

How do you find a press release? It’s simple. A quick Google search should be able to help you find the information you are looking for. Head to Google and type in the brand name + press release. For example if you’re wanting to find the contact for Seventh Generation, you’ll want to search “Seventh Generation Press Release”. Usually the first few search results will be the latest press releases from the brand.

Scroll to the bottom of the press release and the contact information should be there.

2. Utilize LinkedIn to find brand PR contacts

I think that LinkedIn is one of the most undervalued resources in the blogging world. Not only is it a great way to connect with other people professionally, it is a great way to find contacts as well. I’ve connected with many PR/marketing professionals on Linked In, received job offers, and so much more on LinkedIn.

You can find brand PR contacts by searching the brand or agency that represents the brand. Once you’ve found the company page, scroll down and select people. There you may be able to find the person you are searching for. Some of the titles for people in charge of influencer partnerships are “Influencer Relations Manager” or “Marketing Manager”. The person’s title will be different depending on the company so you’ll have to do a little research.

3. Ask a friend

In the blogging industry just like any other, connections are golden. This is why I always stress the importance of building up your blog tribe with people you trust 100%. Your tribe can introduce you to the right people and you can grow together. If there’s a blogger in your tribe that has a contact you’re interested in, ask them for an email introduction. It can go a long way.

4. The brand website

The brand’s website should be the first place that you look. It’s the most obvious place to find a contact and if it’s there it saves you time from searching. Most brand websites have a press or newsroom section. There you will find contact information or press releases with the information.

If the only thing that you can find on their website is a customer service email then don’t be afraid to shoot your shot. Sometimes the email will be forwarded to the correct person. If that doesn’t work, try another one of these methods to find an exact contact.

5. Don’t forget about social media

Don’t sleep on social media. It’s one of the most valuable resources we have in our digital age. If you’ve exhausted all of the other resources above then reach out to the brand on social media. Follow the brand on social media, engage with them by liking and commenting on their content, then send them a DM letting them know what information you’re looking for. Introduce yourself of course by telling them your name and a short bit about your blog and ask them if they can point you in the right direction of the person to send your pitch to.

Once you find the right contact, be professional and nice in your emails. I’ve heard so many horror stories about bloggers who are just hitting up these brands for free stuff just because they think they can. Work on building a relationship with the contact over time. In the long run a relationship with a brand contact of an asset than just having the contact.
