What does taking on this new role of International Grand Basileus mean to you?

This role represents the pinnacle of my lifelong dedication to Sigma Gamma Rho. It is both
humbling and empowering to lead such a historic organization, especially as we continue to
navigate our next century of service. I view it as a responsibility to build upon the legacy of the
phenomenal women who came before me while inspiring future generations of sisters to carry
our mission forward.

You are now the leader of one of the Divine 9 organizations. What does that feel like?

Becoming the leader of a Divine 9 organization feels incredibly inspiring and humbling. It’s an
honor to carry forward a legacy built by trailblazing leaders who championed social justice,
education, and community uplift. It comes with a profound sense of responsibility—not only to our members but also to the communities we serve. I feel a deep connection to our history and to the mission that’s guided us since 1922. Each decision is an opportunity to further empower our organization, deepen our global impact, and inspire future leaders. It’s both a privilege and a purpose-driven journey I’m proud to embrace.

What inspired you to initially join Sigma Gamma Rho, and how has your journey within
the organization evolved over the years?

My inspiration to join Sigma Gamma Rho stemmed from a desire to be part of a sisterhood with a legacy of service and a deep commitment to uplifting communities. I was introduced to Sigma Gamma Rho from my cousin. She is a big sister to me and I wanted to be like her when I was growing up. I used to sneak and wear her sorority shirts and read her books. I had no
awareness of what I was doing, I just wanted to be like her. I then went to Wilberforce
University, the first private HBCU and met women who took me under their wing and
demonstrated true sisterhood. Over the years, my journey has been one of growth, learning,
and service. Each role I’ve held—whether regional or international—has prepared me for this
leadership position and strengthened my commitment to our mission. I have also had some
great mentors who inspired me and encouraged me to step into leadership roles.

What do you believe sets Sigma Gamma Rho apart and makes its sisterhood unique?

Sigma Gamma Rho stands out for its never ending commitment to service and authentic
sisterhood, fostering a community where members not only uplift one another but also work
tirelessly to impact change on a global scale. Rooted in the legacy of its founders, the sorority
embraces a mission that extends beyond traditional service, addressing critical issues like
education disparities, health, and social justice with a dedication that resonates across
generations. Through this unique blend of purpose-driven action and genuine camaraderie,
Sigma Gamma Rho continues to empower women and communities alike, leaving an indelible
mark on society.

In your opinion, what are the most pressing challenges facing the sorority and its
members today? How do you plan to address these during your tenure?

One of the most pressing challenges we face is ensuring the sorority remains relevant and
adaptable in an ever-evolving world. We must continue to address the disparities affecting Black women and children, including health, education, and economic challenges. During my tenure, I plan to strengthen our advocacy and partnerships, expand our educational and community initiatives, and ensure our members have access to the resources they need to make a difference in their communities. Additionally, I will focus on strengthening our sisterhood in the spirit of “One Sigma”, the theme of unity across the board through the Sorority’s administration, through support networks and morale-boosting activities that promote empowerment and unity. By fostering resilience and connection, we can ensure our members remain uplifted and aligned with our mission, even in uncertain times.

Can you share some of your key priorities or goals for the sorority during your term?

My priorities include expanding our global footprint, increasing member engagement, and
strengthening our internal operations to support chapters more effectively. I also plan to focus
on leadership development at all levels—ensuring that both undergraduates and alumnae feel
empowered to lead and contribute to our future.

How has the sisterhood helped you get to where you are today?
The sisterhood has played a pivotal role in getting me to where I am today. Throughout my
journey, I’ve been fortunate to have far too many mentors to count—each one offering
guidance, wisdom, and encouragement at different stages of my life. Whether through personal challenges, career milestones, or moments of doubt, my sorors have always been there, providing unwavering support. What’s been most valuable is my willingness to learn from their experiences and listen with an open heart. The sorority’s emphasis on continuous growth and the power of collaboration has shaped my path, reminding me that I am never alone and always surrounded by a network of incredible women who want to see me succeed.

What community initiatives are you most excited about implementing or continuing
under your leadership?

I am particularly excited about initiatives that support women’s health and wellness, educational access, and financial empowerment. Programs like Project Cradle Care, which supports maternal and child health, will remain a priority, as will scholarships and mentoring initiatives that prepare young people for success. Our partnerships and community-based initiatives will expand to meet the current needs of our communities.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black greekdom?

Watch The Yard plays a critical role in preserving and sharing our unique stories and traditions. It ensures that the rich history of Black Greek life is not only remembered but celebrated, especially in a digital age. Platforms like Watch The Yard help bridge gaps between
generations, keeping our history alive and vibrant.

As a leader, how do you plan to help strengthen the bond between undergraduate
and alumnae chapters?

Strengthening the bond between undergraduate and alumnae chapters is essential for the
sorority’s continuity and growth. I plan to create more opportunities for intergenerational
mentorship, professional development, and collaboration on service initiatives. By fostering
these connections, we can ensure that both undergraduates and alumnae feel valued, engaged,
and committed to advancing our mission together.

What do you think we as a D9 community need to do to ensure that our organizations
and culture are thriving 50 years from now?

As a D9 community, we must continue to preserve our values, adapt to modern challenges, and
address the needs of our communities. This means embracing technology, advocating for
justice, and ensuring our members have the resources and support they need to lead
effectively. By working together, we can create an enduring legacy of service and leadership.
During the recent election the D9 was able to work together on Voter Mobilization to prove that we are #D9StrongerTogether. I am excited to keep the momentum going.

Looking ahead, what would success look like for Sigma Gamma Rho by the end of
your term?

Success, to me, would be a sorority that is stronger, more unified, and even more impactful. I
hope to see growth in membership, increased community engagement, and expanded support
for women and children. Success will also mean that every member feels supported, valued,
and inspired to carry forward our legacy of “Greater Service, Greater Progress.”

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to International Grand Basileus Marica T. Harris for taking the time to speak with Watch The Yard and share her insights, experiences, and vision for Sigma Gamma Rho. Her commitment to service and leadership continues to inspire and uplift the sorority and its members. We look forward to seeing her impactful work unfold and wish her great success in her tenure as the 26th International Grand Basileus.
