Melvin Evans was a Crucian politician best known for being the first Governor elected in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He was born in Christiansted, U.S. Virgin Islands. Evans attended Howard University and the University of California Berkeley. Before being appointed Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, he served as the Virgin Islands Health Commissioner.
After Evans finished serving as Governor in 1971, he was elected Delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the U.S. Virgin Islands as a Republican. He became a U.S. Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago and served in that seat until he passed away in 1984.
