How to Make DIY Olympics Cupcake Toppers with Cricut Joy
We’re having a little Olympics watch party at home together. I wanted to jazz things up a bit by creating fun and festive cupcake toppers. Using your Cricut Joy, you can create patriotic toppers that everyone will love. Let’s dive into the supplies you’ll need and the steps to make these festive toppers.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Cricut Joy
- Navy blue cardstock
- Red permanent vinyl
- White permanent vinyl
- Transfer tape
- Weeding tool
- Scraper tool
- Hot glue gun
- Toothpicks
- Design Space File

Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Set Up Your Cricut Joy: Plug in your Cricut Joy and connect it to your computer or smartphone. Open the Cricut Design Space app and get ready to design your toppers.
- Design Your Toppers: Pull up the file in Cricut Design Space. You can make edits to the file as needed.
- Prepare the Cardstock: Place a piece of navy blue cardstock onto your Cricut Joy mat. Load the mat into the machine.
- Cut the Flags: Hit the “Go” button and let the Cricut Joy do its magic. Once done, carefully remove the cardstock from the mat.
- Prepare the Vinyl: Next, place the red and white permanent vinyl onto the Cricut Joy mat, one color at a time. Make sure the shiny side is facing up. Load the mat into the machine.
- Cut the Letters: Cut the letters out of the red vinyl first, then repeat the process with the white vinyl. After cutting, use your weeding tool to remove the excess vinyl around the letters.
7. Apply Transfer Tape: Cut a piece of transfer tape and place it over the red “USA” letters. Use the scraper tool to press the tape firmly onto the vinyl. Peel the backing off the vinyl so the letters stick to the transfer tape.
8. Attach the Vinyl Letters: Position the white “USA” letters on the navy cardstock. Use the scraper tool to press them down firmly, then carefully peel away the transfer tape. Repeat this process with the red “USA” letters on top of the red vinyl for a layered look.
9. Assemble the Toppers: Use a hot glue gun to attach a toothpick to the back of each navy blue flag with the “USA” letters on it. Let the glue dry completely.
10. Decorate Your Cupcakes: Once the glue is dry, stick your Team USA toppers into the cupcakes. Now your treats are ready to impress your guests!
