Detroit School Bus Driver Charged
A Detroit school bus driver has been charged in connection to a car accident that ended in an autistic 13-year-old fatally hit by a car after getting dropped off. The woman has been accused of not following protocol to put in place to show ongoing traffic a student is getting off the bus, which led to a child being struck by a car.
Debra White works at ABC Student Transportation has been charged with 2nd-degree Child Abuse and Failure to Stop at the Scene by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy’s office on April 10th. White is said to have failed to activate the bus’s stop sign and lights when she allowed Zyair Harris to exit her bus.
The prosecutor’s office says the 65-year-old was hired to pick up students to and from public schools in Detroit. While finishing a drop-off on one of her routes on April 6, around 4:40 p.m., when she stopped her bus outside the entrance of an apartment, where one student, the victim Harris, was a resident.
After being dropped off the teen was struck by a car once he got off the bus. Harris later passed away due to the injuries he had, four days later at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit.
The student’s mother puts a lot of the blame on White according to WMBF. “It’s the bus driver’s fault,” Cassandra Jones said talking about her son’s death.
“My son was autistic, so you didn’t care, you just let him out, in the middle of the street,” mother said. “And then when he got hit, she pulled out, she saw him get hit and still pulled off.”
The family has started a GoFundMe for the funeral’s expenses.
The teen’s godmother, Micaah Neal, thinks the charge is a step toward “justice.”
Now the area where the student lived is asking residents to slow down to avoid incidents like the death of Harris. The probable cause conference has been scheduled for April 19, at 8:30 a.m., and a week later, the preliminary examination on April 26. White is currently being held on a $50,000 bond.
