Tbilisi, Georgia – Nineteen bodies have been recovered from the wreckage of a Turkish military transport plane that crashed in eastern Georgia, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The aircraft, carrying 20 personnel, went down late Tuesday while flying from Azerbaijan to Turkey. Authorities have also located the aircraft’s black box, which is expected to play a crucial role in determining the cause of the crash.
According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Lockheed C-130 transport plane lost contact with air traffic control shortly after entering Georgian airspace near the Sighnaghi region. The aircraft did not issue a distress signal before disappearing from radar. Search and rescue teams from both Turkey and Georgia reached the crash site after several hours of difficult operations in mountainous terrain and adverse weather conditions.
Nineteen of the servicemen’s remains have been recovered, while efforts continue to locate the final missing individual. The bodies are being transported to Ankara for identification and military honors. Erdoğan expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, declaring a national day of mourning and extending condolences to the families of the victims.
Investigators have retrieved the black box and flight data recorders, which will be analyzed by Turkish aviation experts in coordination with Georgian authorities. Early reports suggest the crash may have been caused by technical failure or severe weather, but officials have not ruled out other possibilities.
The incident marks one of the deadliest air accidents involving the Turkish Armed Forces in recent years. Both countries have pledged full transparency in the ongoing investigation, which aims to uncover the precise sequence of events leading to the disaster.
