Did you know that Louis Sullivan, Co-Founder and first President of the Morehouse School of Medicine is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha? It is true! Louis Sullivan pledged the Alpha Rho Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Louis Wade Sullivan is a health policy leader, minority health advocate, author, physician, and educator. During President George H. W. Bush’s term, he served as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Sullivan was born in Atlanta, GA, and knew he wanted to pursue healthcare at 5 years old. In 1950, Louis graduated as Class Salutatorian at Booker T. Washington High School. He decided to enroll at Morehouse College where he graduated magna cum laude in 1954. He is certified in internal medicine and hematology, holds a mastership from the American College of Physicians, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha academic honor societies.
In 1975, Sullivan became the founding dean and director of the Medical Education Program at Morehouse College. In 1978, the program became The School of Medicine at Morehouse College. The school admitted its first 24 students to a two-year program in the basic medical sciences. The school became independent from Morehouse College and was renamed Morehouse School of Medicine in 1981. During this time Sullivan served as Dean and President.
