California Wildfire Aid Politics-NPR Morning Edition
Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, a skeptic of federal aid for California wildfire victims and an anti-science, climate change skeptic discusses his disinclination to sending aid to wildfire-damaged California communities. Senator Johnson has shown a pattern of opposition to disaster relief legislation, but all or nearly all of these bills have passed the Senate with his views in the decided minority. Now, at the dawn of the second Trump Era, such opposition to relief for California Wildfire Aid is likely to carry much more weight in this Congress. Many of his fellow Republicans appear increasingly emboldened to see post-impact assistance as something that can be conditioned. This may mark a new era wherein support for fellow citizens is seen first and foremost as a political lever with which to extract concessions from jurisdictions seen as politically adversarial to a given political faction.
