Healthy gums are crucial for a healthy smile. Without proper care, gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, can develop. This condition affects the bone structure that supports the teeth and, in severe cases, can lead to tooth loss. The two more common types of gum disease are Gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is largely preventable and reversible, while periodontitis, though is irreversible, can be managed and slowed down with professional treatment. Symptoms of gum disease include red, swollen, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, and loose teeth.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),  periodontitis is a very common type of gum disease among U.S. adults. It disproportionately affects around 57% of Non-Hispanic Black adults 30 years or older.
