(BPRW) “One Big Ugly Bill” Betrays Vulnerable Americans to Benefit Wealthiest

(Black PR Wire) NEW YORK (May 22, 2025) — National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued the following statement in response to the budget bill passed by the House of Representatives:

“In contrast to its name, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” is One Big Ugly Bill.  It is a massive wealth transfer from those at the bottom of the economy to those at the top and will harm vulnerable people by cutting healthcare, education, and nutrition — not only for the neediest but also for working families and seniors.

“We urge the Senate to summarily reject this Big Ugly Bill and work on a bipartisan basis to develop a fiscal blueprint that invests in the American people and honor its commitment to the communities it represents.

“Despite repeated promises to protect Medicaid, the bill – in a slap to the face of the American people — slashes $792.2 billion, estimated to strip coverage from 8.7 million Americans laying the burden for billionaires’ tax cuts on our most vulnerable families.

“Taxpayers earning $1 million or more a year will receive a tax break that is approximately 300 times as large as the meager savings afforded to families earning less than $50,000.

“In addition to betraying millions of Americans who rely on Medicaid, the Act also puts nutritional assistance out of reach for many by slashing billions from SNAP and creating additional hurdles to accessing both programs.

“The Act also exposes the lies the administration and its allies have promoted about “savings” by increasing the deficit and raising the debt ceiling by $4 trillion.

“The National Urban League last week released The Main Street Tax Initiative, a ten-point equity-centered plan to correct historic tax inequities, close the racial wealth gap, and fuel economic mobility for low- and moderate-income Americans. Together with our partners in the Fair Budget Coalition, we will continue to advocate for a responsible federal budget that centers fairness, opportunity, and economic security for all Americans.”
