(BPRW) International African American Museum to Host Third Annual Juneteenth Celebration: J.O.Y. | Juneteenth on the Yard
(Black PR Wire) Charleston, S.C. – The International African American Museum (IAAM) is proud to announce its signature Juneteenth celebration, J.O.Y. | Juneteenth on the Yard, will be taking place on Friday, June 19, from noon to 5 p.m. This annual, multigenerational program serves as a vibrant center for joy, reflection, culture, and community. It also commemorates the powerful turning point in American history when news of emancipation finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, in 1865.
The museum invites the public to its African Ancestors Memorial Garden for a day of outdoor festivities, music, storytelling, and fellowship. In honor of the holiday, IAAM will also offer complimentary museum admission throughout the day starting at 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., allowing guests to explore the galleries and delve deep into the history of the African American journey.
“J.O.Y. is more than a celebration; it reflects the enduring meaning of Juneteenth itself — the coexistence of remembrance into rejoicing, hardship and liberation,” said Brandon Reid, IAAM’s Public Historian. “Gathered on this sacred ground where countless Africans once entered this country in bondage, we reclaim space through community, culture, and collective expression while honoring the resilience and traditions carried forward across generations. Together, we affirm the power of memory, presence, and celebration to transform a site once tied to displacement into one of reflection, restoration, and belonging.”
This year marks a significant milestone for the celebration as TD joins as the inaugural official sponsor of 2026 J.O.Y. | Juneteenth on the Yard. This partnership builds their long-standing commitment to IAAM, which began as a founding donor in 2016. TD continues to champion the museum’s mission of illuminating African American history and fostering inclusive learning experiences for future generations.
“TD has been a proud supporter of IAAM’s mission since its inception in 2016,” said Paige Carlson-Heim, Head of U.S. Social Impact at TD. “As the inaugural sponsor of Juneteenth on the Yard, we’re excited to help bring programming to the community that honors history and celebrates collective joy.”
A Celebration of Music and Movement
This year’s mainstage features an extraordinary lineup of talent. Three-time GRAMMY-nominated artist D Smoke will headline the program, bringing his lyrical precision and powerful reflections on identity and community to the Yard.
In addition, Lowcountry native and acclaimed artist Benny Starr will present “The Table.” Curated specifically for this celebration and in connection with IAAM’s 2026 main theme, Soul(Food) of Freedom, “The Table” weaves together music, storytelling, and movement. The curated performance will draw on the cultural tradition of gathering to explore memory, care, and collective joy with an array of local talent.
The Garden Experience
The African Ancestors Memorial Garden will be transformed into several key activity zones:
- Visions of J.O.Y. (Sponsored by TD): A multi-layered activation featuring a live photography station where families and friends can capture their personal visions of joy.
- Live Broadcast with Z93 JAMZ: Beginning at noon, Z93 JAMZ’ Riecy G. comes back as this year’s host, anchoring a live broadcast featuring music, interviews, and giveaways.
- Vendor Bazaar: Curated by the Charleston Black Expo, this marketplace celebrates Black entrepreneurship, featuring unique products from local Black-owned businesses.
- Ubuntu Village: Rooted in the philosophy “I am because we are,” this family-friendly space offers hands-on activities and cultural crafts designed to spark curiosity and honor heritage.
- Food Hall: A curated selection of over 10 local vendors that will offer a range of cuisines rooted in the Global African Diaspora, showcasing how food serves as a medium for storytelling.
A Digital Connection: The J.O.Y. Exchange
Extending the celebration beyond the museum walls, IAAM officially launched The J.O.Y. Exchange on Monday, June 1. For the entire month of June, this digital platform invites global audiences to share and explore expressions of joy through a dynamic social wall using the hashtags #VisionsOfJoy, #JoyOnTheYard2026, and #IAAM. During the event on June 19, digital screens throughout the Garden will display these real-time photos and messages, creating a shared, living narrative of the day.
Registration and Attendance
While the outdoor J.O.Y. festivities are open to the public, guests wishing to take advantage of the free museum admission are strongly encouraged to pre-register for timed-entry tickets from the museum’s website here, with pre-registration available on Monday, June 1. Walk-up entries will be accepted based on building capacity.
