(BPRW) Black Women’s Health Imperative Announces Dr. Barbara J. Brown as New Board President

(Black PR Wire) Washington, D.C. — The Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI), the leading national non-profit organization dedicated to the health and well-being of Black women and girls, is proud to announce the appointment of Barbara J. Brown, PhD, as its new Board President, effective October 14th, 2023. Dr. Brown succeeds the esteemed Dr. Angela Marshall, who has served with unwavering dedication for 6 years.

Dr. Barbara J. Brown is a licensed clinical psychologist who has dedicated over 30 years to improving the mental health of individuals, families, and communities through direct service, training, program development, and as a serial entrepreneur in the business of mental health and wellness. As a subject matter expert, Dr. Brown is a frequent public speaker and writer on a variety of mental health topics and espouses that what is perceived as abnormal behavior is often a normal response to an abnormal situation. She believes that accurate attribution of bio-psycho-social determinants within a cultural context is the key to destigmatize and equitably treat psychological problems. Dr. Brown is a strong advocate of routine mental health screening at all developmental stages to provide early intervention and ameliorate the current mental health crisis.

Dr. Brown is the Founder/CEO/Owner of CapitolHill Consortium for Counseling & Consultation, LLC (www.ccccmentalhealth.com) and Unicorn Health Care, LLC (www.unicornhealthcare.com) in the Washington DC region. Collectively, the sister agencies employ over 60 therapists who provide psychotherapy, psychological assessment, and testing for children, adolescents, and adults as well as community and corporate based coaching, consultation, workshops, and wellness retreats. She has been honored as a Top 100 MBE Business by the Capital Region Minority Supplier Development Council, Enterprising Women of the Year, EY Entrepreneur Access Network Cohort, Inc 5000 Fastest Growing US Companies, and is certified by WBENC and WOSB.

Dr. Brown serves the larger community in national organizations including the Black Women’s Health Imperative (Board Chair), the Boris L. Henson Foundation (Advisory Council), the BOW Collective (Founding Member), W.E.W. (Member), Enterprising Women (Advisory Board), Women Business Collaborative (Advisory Council), and local organizations including the Episcopal Children’s Center (Board Member), and the Washington DC Chapter of the Links, Incorporated (Co-Chair Health & Human Services Facet).

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Barbara J. Brown as the new Board President of the Black Women’s Health Imperative,” stated Linda Goler Blount, MPH, President of BWHI. “Dr. Brown’s  ability to integrate mental health into the conversation and commitment to responsive and equitable treatment will undoubtedly enhance our efforts to improve the health and wellness of Black women and girls nationwide.”

Dr. Angela Marshall, the outgoing Board President, has played a pivotal role in BWHI’s growth and impact over the years. Her dedication and tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on the organization, and her service will always be appreciated and remembered.

Dr. Angela Marshall’s years of exceptional leadership have been instrumental in shaping the Black Women’s Health Imperative into the formidable force it is today,” said Dr. Barbara J. Brown. “I am honored to follow in her footsteps and build upon her legacy. Together with the BWHI team, I am committed to continuing the critical work of improving the health and well-being of Black women and girls across the nation.”

Black Women’s Health Imperative looks forward to the promising future under the guidance of Dr. Barbara J. Brown and all the members of its dedicated Board.
