Black Greekdom Mourns the Passing of Delta Sigma Theta’s Nikki Giovanni and Honors Her Legacy

The world has lost a literary giant and an unwavering voice for justice and truth. Nikki Giovanni, the acclaimed poet, activist, author, teacher, and soror of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. passed away peacefully on December 9, 2024, at the age of 81. She was surrounded by love, with her life-long partner, Virginia “Ginney” Fowler, by her side.

“The acclaimed poet, Black Arts Movement icon whose poems of wit, wonder, and wisdom were celebrated in children’s books, on keynote stages and television shows, and in more than two dozen bestselling poetry collections, died peacefully on December 9, 2024, with her life-long partner, Virginia [Ginney] Fowler, by her side,” read an announcement from friend and fellow writer Renée Watson, according to CNN.

Giovanni’s remarkable career spanned decades, during which she mesmerized audiences with her sharp wit, evocative prose, and bold insights into civil rights, social justice, gender, and race. She authored dozens of poetry collections, essays, anthologies, and more than 10 children’s books, solidifying her place as a literary icon. At Virginia Tech, where she served as an emerita professor in the English department, her legacy was celebrated with numerous honors, including the inaugural Rosa L. Parks Woman of Courage Award, the American Book Award, the Langston Hughes Award, the Virginia Governor’s Award for the Arts, the Emily Couric Leadership Award, and seven NAACP Image Awards. Over her illustrious life, Giovanni also received 27 honorary degrees, reflecting her profound impact on literature and society.

A proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Giovanni embodied the sorority’s principles of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. Her affiliation with the illustrious sisterhood and her education at Fisk University, a historically Black university, shaped her path as a cultural icon and advocate for the Black community.

Watch her tribute poem to Delta Sigma Theta titled “We Marched”.

Known for her groundbreaking contributions to the Black Arts Movement, Giovanni’s work often celebrated Black joy, resilience, and cultural pride while shedding light on the injustices faced by marginalized communities. Her voice resonated through generations, inspiring countless individuals to embrace their truths and fight for equity.

We at Watch The Yard honor the extraordinary legacy of Nikki Giovanni, whose life and work have left an indelible mark on the world. Her words will continue to inspire and uplift as a testament to the power of art, activism, and unwavering dedication to justice.

Rest in power, Soror Nikki Giovanni. Your light will forever guide us.

We at Watch The Yard ask that you keep Nikki Giovanni’s family, friends and sorority sisters in your thoughts. We also ask that you leave your condolences and memories of her so that her family can see how much she meant to all of us.
