Black Greekdom Mourns the Death of Zeta Phi Beta Soror Angie Stone

The Black geek community is in mourning following the tragic passing of Grammy-nominated R&B singer, songwriter, and actress Angie Stone, a beloved member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Stone, 63, was killed early Saturday morning in a devastating car crash while traveling back to Atlanta from Alabama.

According to the Associated Press, Stone was a passenger in a cargo van when the vehicle flipped over and was subsequently hit by a big rig around 4 a.m. Music producer Walter Millsap III, who learned the news from Stone’s daughter, Diamond, and her longtime The Sequence group member Blondy, confirmed the heartbreaking details. While all other passengers survived, Stone tragically lost her life in the accident.

A pioneer in the music industry, Stone was widely recognized for her contributions to the R&B and neo-soul genres, earning three Grammy nominations and two Soul Train Awards over the course of her illustrious career. She first gained prominence as a member of the all-female hip-hop trio The Sequence, before making a lasting impact with solo hits such as Wish I Didn’t Miss You and Brotha.

In July 2024, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated honored Stone by inducting her as an honorary member into its Alpha Omega Chapter during the organization’s Grand Boule in Indianapolis. This recognition underscored her influence as a cultural icon and her dedication to uplifting the Black community through music and artistry.

Stone was scheduled to perform at the halftime show of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s Championship basketball game on Saturday. In her honor, CIAA Chaplain Pastor Jerome Barber led a moment of silence at the event. CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams-Parker expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “She used her incredible talent, passion, and presence to inspire and touch us with strength and hope.”

We at Watch The Yard ask that you keep Angie Stone’s family, friends and sorority sisters in your thoughts. We also ask that you leave your condolences and memories of her so that her family can see how much she meant to all of us.
