Congressman Al Green, a vocal Democratic opponent of President Donald Trump, is set to leave Congress in January. But Green appears to be going out fighting, as he yet again pursues impeachment against Trump. This is the latest of several efforts by Green to have the president removed from office and to call out Trump for a variety of alleged misdeeds.

Green seeks Trump’s impeachment after ICE killings of civilians

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) filed articles of impeachment against President Trump in the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday. The resolution offered by Green accuses Trump of “failing to uphold his constitutionally mandated solemn presidential oath of office to ‘preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States,’ thereby demonstrating that he is a great threat to democracy and the Constitution for current high crimes and misdemeanors.” Green’s accusations against Trump largely focus on the president’s heavy-handed immigration crackdown. The resolution accuses Trump of “abusing the powers of the presidency by operating United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as his vicious, quota-driven, unaccountable paramilitary police forces, transgressing with anonymity and secrecy, assaulting people, committing and covering up unjustified killings of civilians.”

Green specifically cites the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, who were shot by ICE agents in Minnesota during separate incidents in January, as well as the July fatal ICE shootings of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Texas and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine. “The President is reducing American democracy to an authoritarian regime,” Green concludes. Green posted a video of himself on the steps of the Capitol holding a copy of the articles of impeachment he filed. “These articles are not about Democrats or Republicans, they’re not about conservatives or liberals, they’re not about left or right,” Green said. “They’re about right and wrong. They’re about life and death.” Green also alleged “a cover-up” concerning the four ICE shootings, pledging to “give some details about the cover-up.”
