‘Beef’ Season 2 Stars On Where Their Characters End Up

This interview contains spoilers for Beef Season 2
Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan break down the fates of their characters Josh and Lindsay in Beef Season 2 on Netflix.
When the season ends, Lindsay and Josh are now separated and on different life paths. Years later, Lindsay has remarried finally able to have the child she’s wanted, and Josh is now out of jail.
Mulligan said that she thinks her character “reverted to a sort of safety” in the end.
“There’s a nod to this early in the show, but I think she really did want a child, and so she’s gotten a lifestyle that she’s really comfortable in. But I think there’s a sort of special place for Josh, that there’s a sense that they are bonded forever, but…she’s not waiting for him outside. There were versions where that was the case, that there was a sort of [hope] they were gonna be reunited, but ultimately it didn’t feel probably honest for the two of them. So it sort of felt right to us that there was a sense that there was real love there, but not necessarily that things always work out.”
Isaac said that he sees Josh as “somebody who’s just white-knuckling the entire time.”
“You know, his marriage, his job, his position, everything’s about just gripping as hard as he can. And so when he finally realizes that in that moment…with Lindsay that it’s over, you know, it’s really like he accepts the death of that whole life. That’s when he’s reborn. He has an opportunity to actually finally live in the present moment. And so you know it’s that thing of no matter where you go that you’re still coming with you, you know?”
“The fact that he’s in prison, actually, he’s still the person that he always is. He was someone that just gravitated towards being of service,” he continued. “And so there’s something’s that a bit pure about this version of himself while he’s incarcerated. [He is] able to come out and actually still have compassion and…to kind of let that [old life] go as well. He’s just trying to find a new way through living.”
