Battle of Yorktown 1781: The Victory That Ended the American Revolution

The Battle of Yorktown, fought from September to October 1781, was a critical turning point in the American Revolution, leading to the independence of the 13 colonies. Under the command of General George Washington, the American forces allied with the French army led by General Rochambeau to besiege the town of Yorktown, Virginia. There, British General Charles Cornwallis and his troops had fortified their position, hoping for reinforcements from the British navy. However, the French fleet, commanded by Admiral de Grasse, blocked the British supply lines from the sea, completely isolating Cornwallis.

With over 17,000 soldiers, the American and French forces launched a relentless siege and bombardment on the British defenses. After weeks of intense fighting, with the British fortifications crumbling and supplies running out, Cornwallis was forced to surrender on October 19, 1781. This event marked the collapse of British efforts to maintain control over the North American colonies. The Battle of Yorktown delivered the final blow, pressuring Britain into peace negotiations, which resulted in the Treaty of Paris in 1783, officially recognizing the independence of the United States.
