Awards attendees say Black Entertainment Television is a place to 'see yourself'
(26 Jun 2017) AWARDS ATTENDEES SAY BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION IS A PLACE TO ‘SEE YOURSELF’
The BET (Black Entertainment Television) Awards celebrate excellence in music, acting, sports and other entertainment by African Americans and other minorities – but they’re more than that, say this year’s attendees.
“You can come here, and you’re going to see everybody here,” says TV presenter Loni Love. “You’re going to see black, white, you’re going to see gay, you’re going to see straight – you’re going to see everything. BET has always been about that.”
Actress and comedian Yvette Nicole Brown (“Community,” “Drake and Josh”) says the audience is very broad.
“There’s a lot of people that are tuning in, because a lot of our artists – Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Prince – are universal artists. So BET is universal, BET is home, BET is consciousness. ‘Say Yes to Black’ – I love that tag line. Like, it’s just a place that you’re guaranteed to see yourself.”
Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Maxwell agrees: “BET’s been an incredible, you know, conduit for the representation of all, all beings on the planet.”
California soul singer Goapele says the success of the BET Awards reflects the influence of African-American culture.
“Where music and culture is at right now, I think black culture and black music, and music of the diaspora – but specifically African-American music – has influenced the entire world.”
The 2017 BET Awards took place on Sunday night (25 JUNE) in Los Angeles.
