Alpha Kappa Alpha Soror Tara Murray Leaves White House To Lead National Urban League’s Washington Bureau as Executive Director

Tara Murray, a notable member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, has recently assumed a prominent role as the Executive Director of the National Urban League’s Washington Bureau. Simultaneously, she has taken up the position of Senior Vice President for Policy and Advocacy within the organization, under the leadership of National Urban League President and CEO, Marc H. Morial.

Tara’s journey to this significant role is characterized by a deep commitment to issues of equity, civil rights, and racial justice. Her experience and expertise in these domains are expected to enhance the National Urban League’s public policy agenda and strengthen partnerships with Congress and the Biden Administration, according to Mr. Morial.

Tara Murray’s background includes a tenure as the Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, where she managed national stakeholder outreach and engagement strategy. In this role, her focus lay on the implementation of President Biden’s policies related to equity, civil rights, and racial justice.

Moreover, Murray served as a liaison between the White House and various African-American stakeholders, advising on a range of policy issues, including economic mobility, voting rights, equal educational opportunities, public safety, police accountability, and health equity.

Her responsibilities included representing individuals detained at Guantánamo Bay and initiating groundbreaking investigations into the community impact of drone strikes in Pakistan, which gained international attention and prompted a U.K. judicial review, a United Nations investigation, and a U.S. congressional hearing.

Tara Murray is an accomplished scholar, having graduated from Howard University and Harvard Law School. She also holds an LL.M. degree in Advocacy from Georgetown University Law Center. A proud member of her sorority, Murray is a Spring 2001 initiate of the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha at Howard University where she was the president of the chapter from 2002-2003.

Her appointment as the Executive Director of the National Urban League’s Washington Bureau and Senior Vice President for Policy and Advocacy signifies a significant step in her career and a noteworthy moment for the National Urban League and the communities it serves.
