Alpha Kappa Alpha Soror Appointed First Black Woman To Serve As Maryland Port Commissioner

In a significant move, Maryland Governor Wes Moore has named Karenthia A. Barber, a soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., as a member of the Maryland Port Commission (MPC). This appointment that makes her the first Black woman to hold this position and marks a milestone for the commission, which is tasked with shaping policies to bolster the global competitive edge of the Port of Baltimore.

Barber, renowned for her contributions in consulting, strategy, and motivational speaking, brings a fresh perspective to the Maryland Port Commission. As the Founder and CEO of Professional Development Associates, LLC, a respected consultancy specializing in leadership, workforce training, and human resources advisory, her appointment promises a diverse perspective to the commission’s endeavors.

Notably, Ms. Barber’s firm is actively engaged in diversity, equity, and inclusion audits and consulting, aligning with her commitment to fostering a more inclusive professional landscape.

Educated at the University of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Penn State University’s advanced program, Ms. Barber’s academic and professional achievements are complemented by her credentials from Leadership Maryland and Coach University. Her background as an educator at higher learning institutions underscores her belief in education as a catalyst for societal advancement.

As a devoted life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Links, Inc., Ms. Barber’s affiliations underscore her commitment to community engagement and service.

Barber’s involvement in the community include a wide spectrum of organizations, including the Baltimore City Historical Society, Baltimore Votes, the Maryland Democratic Party, and the Morgan State University President’s Committee for the MSU Choir. Her leadership as the first female Chair of the Board of Trustees of Maryland Automobile Insurance, overseeing a $100-million enterprise, underscores her governance acumen.

A recipient of accolades that underscore her contributions, Ms. Barber was recognized as one of the Top 100 Women in Maryland by The Maryland Daily Record in both 2016 and 2022. Influence Digest also acknowledged her as one of Baltimore’s Top 15 Coaches in 2022. The Living Legend Award from the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs further highlights her impact.

We at Watch The Yard would like to congratulate Barber on her ongoing career growth and contributions to the development of the Port of Baltimore.
