HBCU Student Allegedly Hazed By Turtles Group, Family Claims As They File Lawsuit Against Wilberforce

The family of Wilberforce University student Savanna Jones is filing a lawsuit against the school after she allegedly died during a hazing ritual in April. According to the Dayton Daily News, Jones’ family named several parties in their lawsuit. One of the defendants is Keigan Evans, who serves as director of housing and residence life at the school. The family said in their lawsuit that Evans participated in the hazing and encouraged the fatal incident. At least 30 unnamed people also face accusations in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday in Greene County, Ohio, 13 ABC reported.

What did Savanna Jones’ family say about her death?

According to the lawsuit, Jones died after taking part in a ritual named “Turtle crossing,” organized by an alcohol-based club known as Turtles.

“Students describe it as a social drinking club where members ‘can never deny a shot’ of liquor,” the lawsuit states.

Students are required to complete several challenges before joining the club, including answering questions while drinking a bottle of liquor. Those who answer incorrectly are required to take two shots and return to the end of the line, the lawsuit states.

“Students who could not continue drinking, vomited or became unable to drink were considered unable to complete the process and could not become Turtles,” the family said in their complaint.

The club, according to the complaint, involves various student networks, including band members and resident assistants.

“The Turtles was widely known around Wilberforce, with many students, including Wilberforce band members and Wilberforce-employed resident assistants, participating each year,” the lawsuit states. “The crossings occurred on campus, in residence halls, classrooms and other campus spaces.”

What happened on the night of Savanna Jones’ death?

Per the family, Jones was in a residential dorm with at least 10 other students when she tried to cross Turtles on April 29. The lawsuit states that Jones sent text messages to her friends before taking part in the ritual, saying she was “lowkey scared” to cross Turtles. Later that night, the Wilberforce freshman was allegedly captured in photos after she became unconscious on her bed.

“She became visibly and dangerously intoxicated to the point that she could not stand,” the lawsuit states. “No resident assistant, residence-life employee, residence hall director or campus safety officer (asked) questions when a near-unconscious underage freshman was being carried back to her dorm room on the opposite side of campus.”

Although Wilberforce prohibits alcohol on campus, the lawsuit states that the school failed to enforce its policy.

“Had Wilberforce actively enforced its policies and reasonably supervised its residential spaces, Turtle crossings and hazing-related activities would never have occurred in a campus dorm. And Savanna Jones would never have died,” the lawsuit states.

The family is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, WAFB reported.
