Backstory: Virginia enacted a series of laws restricting the movements and rights of enslaved people, laying the foundation for future slave codes. Afro-American peoples of the Americas is used to refer to people born in the Americas who have African ancestors. Most African Americans are the descendants of Africans forcibly brought to and held captive in the United States from 1555 to 1865.
