Virtual Black Medical Association (BMA) Peaceful Protest

At 10 AM on June 5th, 2020, the Black Medical Association (BMA) at the University of Michigan held a virtual peaceful protest with a panel of medical students, residents, and physicians, who shared their sentiments on the current climate of our country, the unjust loss of Black lives, and their own experiences with systemic racism. More than 1.4k attendees tuned in across the entire healthcare system and beyond, and over 1,480 photos were received in an effort to show solidarity for the countless black lives lost due to police brutality and systemic oppression.

The protest was joined by Dr. Allecia Wilson, MD, the independent medical examiner for the autopsy of George Floyd. Dr. Wilson is an Assistant Professor in Forensic Pathology and Pediatric Pathology, and the Director for Autopsy and Forensic Services and the Residency Training Program at Michigan Medicine. She spoke about her experience, and how she was able to identify the true cause of George Floyd’s death; which was asphyxiation, and was not the cause of death identified in Mr. Floyd’s first autopsy due to racist intent.
