‘You are debt-free’: Anonymous donor pays off balances for graduates of historically Black college in East Texas
An anonymous donor paid off a historically Black college in East Texas students balances. The students at Wiley College were told at their commencement ceremony.
Wiley College said in a news release that over 100 students were at the graduation over the weekend when the school’s president made the announcement. A video of the ceremony posted on social media with the students being told, “You are debt-free. You do not owe the college a penny.”
“We are constantly communicating with donors to assist students in these ways so that they can begin their after-college experience with less debt,” Herman J. Felton Jr., Wiley’s president and CEO said. The college says in the news release that the estimated total for the balances owed to the college by the graduating class of 2022 was approx. $300,000 according to CBS News.
The school is named after Bishop Isaac T. Wiley, Wiley College was founded in 1873. The college was portrayed in the 2007 movie “The Great Debaters” starring Denzel Washington. The movie was inspired by a debate in 1935 in which Wiley prevailed over the University of Southern California’s nationally known.
