A South Carolina father of 20-month old twins who died tragically after he forgot drop them of at daycare and unintentionally left them in his car won’t face any charges. On September 1st, twins Brycen and Brayden McDaniel were discovered dead inside a car outside the Sunshine House Early Learning Academy in Blythewood, South Carolina WMBF reported. The dad who hasn’t been identified had reportedly been experiencing “some intense pressure” in his work at a manufacturing plant “that really had his mind somewhere else that day,” Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said, according to People.

Later that day, the father returned to the daycare to pick up the boys. When he was told that they weren’t there, he went to his car and found the boys lifeless in the backseat. He tried reviving them but wasn’t successful.

“In his mind, he really believed he dropped the two boys off at daycare,” Lott said. “There was no doubt in his mind that he’d done that. He didn’t mean to do it. God, he didn’t mean to do it. He’s got to live with that the rest of his life.”

Lott says that when the father was interviewed after the tragedy, it was “one of the [most] heart-wrenching interviews you ever had to see. The pure emotion that came out was not something you could fake.”

The death of the twins was ruled accidental and their cause of death is listed as hyperthermia. The heat index in the car was 120 degrees at that time and “it didn’t take long” for the tragedy to happen, Richland County Coroner Nadia Rutherford said.

Naida Rutherford has a message for daycare workers if they notice a child doesn’t show up that day, “We urge each parent there are so many stressors with Covid 19, with the world-changing to look in the backseat. Make sure you dropped off the children. For every child care center, baby center, we urge you if the child does not show up to call the family. It could save a life.”
