Frank Armstrong: First Black Graduate at Cornell College
Cornell College first African-American graduate was Frank Jeremiah Armstrong, Class of 1900.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s it wasn’t common for Black baseball players to play on a integrated baseball team. However, this did happened sometimes.
Cornell College started its doors in Mount Vernon, Iowa, in 1853. The college was founded as the Iowa Conference Seminary, adopted the name Cornell College and introduced a collegiate baseball program in 1857. Cornell University adopted a policy of welcoming students of all religions and races. Its first black graduate, Frank Armstrong, also served as captain of the baseball team his final year at Cornell in 1900.
At commencement, he introduced the speaker, Booker T. Washington. He impressed Washington so much he hired Armstrong to be his assistant. Armstrong went on to become a well-established physician in Chicago. Then in 1946, he was tragically fatally shot in his Chicago office.
