Tennessee Man Arrested After Shooting Black Neighbor
A Tennessee man is now facing charges including attempted murder after law enforcement officials say he shot his neighbor and threatened to kill a Clarksville detective. This all comes after a racially charged altercation last month. On Aug, 27 when Steven Andrew Russell, a white man, was charged with attempted murder after his neighbor was found with multiple gunshot wounds, Clarksville Now reported.
The court records obtained by the news outlet, says police responded to calls about a shooting and while on their way they got another call, but this call was from Russell.
The 61-year-old told the 911 dispatcher that he had shot and killed his neighbor, whose identity hasn’t been released, but he is Black.
Investigators said before the incident, Russell and his neighbor had already had an exchange. “This altercation was the result of prolonged racial tension initiated by Russell towards (his neighbor),” according to court records.
Russell is accused of tormenting his neighbor to the point the neighbor took action and struck him with his walking cane, a CPD spokesperson Scott Beaubien said. This is when Russell reportedly pulled out a .22 caliber revolver shot the man hitting him in the arm. The man escaped to his front porch. Russell, however, kept firing until he emptied his weapon before striking the man one last time, before leaving the scene.
The neighbor was later taken to Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville with non-life-threatening injuries. Russell told officers that his neighbor had hit him with a stick, and he was taken in for medical attention for a minor abrasion on his face. Police said Russell told officals he threw the firearm in nearby storm drain to avoid it being used against him. When police searched the area, they were unable to retrieve the gun. However, they found a 12-gauge shotgun that appeared in the National Crime Information Center as stolen.
