Homeschool Room Ideas that Inspire Creativity

Looking for homeschool room ideas that will keep your kids inspired all school year long? I’m revealing our new homeschool room along with tips and tricks to create a space that inspires creativity and supports developmental learning.

Homeschool Room Ideas that Inspire Creativity

We started our homeschool journey 3 years ago when Tatiana was in the 3rd grade. It wasn’t planned and we honestly were just thrown into it. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing when we started. To make the transition easier for us I signed Tatiana up for virtual school and went with the flow. Every day she would pull out her computer and get logged in for class at the dining room table or in her room.

Over time I learned that their system wasn’t the best for us and neither was the space she had to do her school work. As time passed I learned the best way to help Tatiana thrive in homeschool and we developed a homeschool schedule that worked the best for us. Now that we’re going into another school year and we’ve added another kid into the mix, we decided to re-decorate our modern family room into a homeschool room.

Renovating the room is something that I’ve been wanting to do for so long. I want our kids to have a space that’s all theirs and dedicated to learning. T has her own room but that’s her space solely for herself. A homeschool room would be for both Tatiana and Trevor, a space where they could learn and grow together. It would function not only as a homeschool room but a play room as well.

Before getting started on our homeschool room, I had a few ideas in mind of key things I wanted to include. The main goal of the room would be to inspire my kids to be creative and learn through play.

How do I set up a homeschool room?

Step 1: Decide which room in your home you’ll convert

The first step to setting up a homeschool room is deciding which room in your home you’ll makeover. We chose our loft/living room upstairs. It’s the best space because it’s an open space where the kids have tons of room for learning. That makes it easy for them to come and go as they please and for me to keep an eye on them while I’m working in my office down the hall.

Step 2: Pick a color palette that compliments your home and your kids will love

You can have loads of fun picking out colors for your homeschool room with your kids. Our home is painted with neutral colors and has a mid-century modern theme throughout. We wanted to keep a similar palette for this space. Swiss Coffee by Sherwin Williams serves as the main color of the room. The walls upstairs in our home are painted this color. Swiss Coffee is a very light gray color, almost white, that will compliment the other colors in the space. The kids each got to pick a color that they wanted to incorporate into the space.

Step 3: Find furniture for the space

A budget friendly way to decorate this space would be to use furniture from other rooms in your home. We moved a few pieces around in our home but also purchased a new play table for our kids. This round play table has quickly become the kids favorite. We made some built-in storage with a desk space where the kids could sit and get some computer time in. Our TV is mounted in between the desks and we use it for programs like GoNoodle and Circle Time with Ms. Monica.

Step 4: Choose 3 key play stations

Play stations were probably the part of the space that the kids were most excited about. We chose 3 play stations for our homeschool room: a reading nook, an arts & crafts station, and a dress-up station. We put the kids favorite books and costumes in the reading nook and dress-up station. The arts & crafts station is filled with card stock, sensory bins and activities that the kids can rotate throughout the school year. Each item is labeled so that when it’s time to clean up the kids remember where to put things back.
