While continuing to face criticism for choosing her health instead of pursuing a gold medal at the Olympics, Simone Biles posted a video on Instagram to show why she withdrew from the women’s team final on Tuesday. The gymnast spoke about experiencing the “twisties” and showed a clip of herself falling on a soft cushion while trying to complete stunts on the uneven bars during training on Friday, ESPN reported.

“I don’t think you realize how dangerous this is on hard, competitive surfaces,” the Olympian said on her Instagram stories. 

She added that her “mind and body are simply not in sync.”

“Sometimes I can’t even fathom twisting. I seriously cannot comprehend how to twist. Strangest and weirdest thing,” she said, adding that the problem “randomly started happening after prelims competition the very next morning.”

While answering questions from her followers, Biles said she has experienced similar symptoms in the past, but it usually shows up only on the floor and vault performances and lasts two or more weeks. 

“It’s never transferred to bars and beam for me, but this time it’s literally on every event. Which sucks. Really bad,” the 24-year-old said.

The two-time Olympian also admitted that she’s having difficulty in distinguishing up and down.

“Literally cannot tell up from down. It’s the craziest feeling ever,” she said. “Not having an inch of control over your body. What’s even scarier is since I have no idea where I am in the air, I also have NO idea how I’m going to land, or what I’m going to land on. Head/hands/feet/back.”

Sports analysts and casual fans, many of who only remember gymnastics once every four years, have been shaming the star athlete, saying she disappointed her team and country. Biles wondered if any of those people have any idea what it’s like to be in her position.

“I also have no idea how I landed on my feet on that vault because if you look at the pictures and my eyes you can see how confused I am as to where I am in the air,” she said. “Thankfully I landed safe enough, but I also don’t think some of you realize I was supposed to do a 2½ and I only completed 1½ twists before it looks like I got shot out of the air.”

The superstar left one last message for those who want to call her a quitter.

“I’ve had plenty of bad performances throughout my career and finished the competition,” she said. “I simply got so lost my safety was at risk as well as a team medal.”

After withdrawing from the team final on Tuesday, Biles also skipped the individual all-around competition on Thursday, choosing to focus on her health. The gymnast hasn’t confirmed whether she will return to competition, HuffPost reported.
