95-year-old Crossing Guard Ends Her Retirement, Says She Was ‘Bored’ Comes Back To Work
A South Carolina woman is coming out of retirement after leaving her job a month ago. The 95-year-old decided to come out of retirement and put back on her crossing guard uniform and return to her post because of a sense of duty.
On Aug. 22, the first day of the school 2022-2023 school year, Estella Williams went back to the role she’s worked for the last 26 years as Westside High School crossing guard, the Independent Mail reported.
Officials at Anderson School District Five said they needed help with the safety of the students. Therefore, Williams unretired and says she loves her job and according to WYFF 4, she was “bored.”
“I just got bored,” she said, adding she tried volunteering with Meals on Wheels, Hospice and the Veterans Hospital to supplement not working but she said “that wasn’t enough.”
Williams was ready to get back to work and back and even attended orientation like a newbie a few days prior. s
“They were happy to see me come in,” Williams said.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump tweeted his acknowledgement her as “the oldest crossing guard in the US.”
